Secondary maths teachers whose schools want to introduce and embed teaching for mastery can nominate two teachers (Mastery Advocates) to join a Work Group. You will be part of a locally-based group of teachers who meet regularly to develop professional knowledge and expertise, as well as receiving bespoke support.

​In a Teaching for Mastery Work Group you will:

• collaborate with colleagues from other local schools to share best practice

• get individual school support and guidance from a local leader of maths education (LLME)

• take away ideas to help your students become more confident mathematicians, ready to tackle GCSEs and A level

• introduce and embed teaching for mastery in your classroom and department

Has your school previously been part of an advocate group or had a trained mastery specialist?  If yes, then your school may be eligible to join our sustaining Teaching for Mastery programme.

The focus will be on working on their planned developments as well as sharing and critiquing them with a group of schools in a professional learning community.  Some bespoke opportunities may include:

• visits hosted by a Work Group member’s department to engage in lesson observation and post-lesson discussion

• collaborative planning of a topic representing a shared interest and need

• a visit to a primary school to engage in lesson observation and post-lesson discussion and/or collaborative planning of a topic relevant to transition between KS2 and KS3

• exploring some maths together to better understand the key conceptual development involved in understanding it deeply

• sharing, discussing and critiquing the plans that departments have in place.

All bespoke sessions will be determined by the group participants and needs of the schools.

A key aim of the NCETM and Maths Hubs is to develop successful secondary mathematics departments that are well led and that provide ongoing subject professional development through collaborative working both within and between departments.

The purpose of this programme is to offer focused support to secondary heads of department/subject leaders, to enable them to better understand and implement teaching for mastery approaches across their department, and to develop in their role as leaders of both pupil learning and teacher professional development. 

Throughout this programme, heads of maths / subject leaders will be supported in reflecting on their vision, curriculum, policies, practices and development priorities. Teaching for mastery approaches in secondary maths will be modelled and explored, taking into account the contexts and needs of the participants

The stated aims of the KS4 Programme of Study are that, through working on the content, students should develop mathematical fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving. While mathematical thinking is a key feature of all of these, the focus of this Work Group is to support teachers in developing their understanding of mathematical thinking as it relates to problem-solving and reasoning, using practical task types to explore what it means for students to get better at mathematical thinking and what this looks like in the classroom. 

The Work Group will: 

• Offer teachers support so that they are better equipped to help all students develop their mathematical thinking, ultimately preparing them for the challenges of the GCSE and beyond 
• Support teachers in understanding and using participation in a Work Group as the basis of collaborative continued professional development for themselves and within their department. 

Feedback from participants: 

‘They [pupils] are more prepared to talk about maths and their reasoning which in turn enable me to help them link different topic areas, but misconceptions and help them achieve a deeper understanding.’ 

‘I have already disseminated the training to colleagues and, as a department, we aim to include at least one of these types of tasks in every lesson next year (we have completed this year’s teaching) with the aim of breaking down the barriers that learners perceive in their ability to tackle the longer form of GCSE questions (particularly those that link topics).’ 

Who can take part? 

This is for teachers of KS4 who want to further develop their understanding of developing mathematical thinking, and practical classroom strategies to explore these ideas. Participants are encouraged to lead developments from the Work Group in their own department and so should have the opportunity to do this effectively.  

Departments that have already engaged with the Work Group have the opportunity to continue with the Work Group structure in order to explore further and think more deeply about supporting mathematical thinking in the classroom by participating in a second ‘deepening’ year.

This project focuses on teachers working together to analyse, deconstruct and trace through the curriculum a selected key topic area that may typically cause difficulty for pupils at GCSE.  Teachers will be supported to develop insight into effective teaching approaches, and consider the implications for longer term curriculum design, focussing on the impact of a coherent journey from year 7 – 11 to support long term depth in pupil understanding. 

The project was previously known as Challenging Topics at GCSE, but its name has been amended to more accurately reflect the work undertaken as well as to convey the importance of curriculum coherence. 

Feedback from participants: 

‘I have a deep insight into the maths that underpins specific challenging topics at GCSE’ 

‘As a result of participating in the Work Group I have developed my awareness of connections within the curriculum’ 

Who can take part? 

Participants should be secondary school teachers of GCSE Maths. Individuals or ideally pairs of teachers from a department participate, with an expectation that they will work with other members of their department at appropriate points. 

Schools that have participated in previous years may do so again, as developments often take place over time.

This programme is new to Maths Hub this year but is a continuation of the teacher subject specialism training (TSST) that was available in previous years through different institutions.  The programme is aligned to the NCETM teaching for mastery pedagogy and is based on six key themes:

• Structure of the number system

• Operating on number

• Multiplicative reasoning

• Sequences and graphs

• Statistics and probability

• Geometry.

​​Participants will explore these themes, supported by an experienced secondary practitioner.

Participants will:

• explore and increase their use of a range of pedagogic approaches consistent with teaching for mastery

• increase their confidence in planning for progression in maths

• improve their subject and curriculum knowledge of secondary maths with a particular emphasis on mathematical structures in key areas.

Who can take part?

This programme is for non-specialist teachers of maths in state-funded schools who fit the following definition:

'A non-specialist teacher of mathematics is ‘a teacher that is currently teaching some mathematics who has not undertaken initial teacher training (ITT) in mathematics’.

If there is sufficient space in the cohort, other teachers of maths who do not fit this definition but would benefit from this support may also participate.​

Over a series of sessions, this group will work collaboratively to explore and trial ways of adapting teaching, so that students with SEND can be successful learners and make progress in Maths, alongside their peers. The sessions will raise teacher awareness and confidence, providing practical strategies to support students with a range of learning needs.

Participants will share ideas to support identified students in their class and will use these to inform their teaching back in school.

This group is suitable for KS1 to KS4 teachers and SENCOs, from mainstream schools.

This project aims to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school by focusing on curriculum and continuity over Years 5 to 8. Following the disruption to education caused by the Covid crisis, this transition is more crucial than ever.  Central to the Work Group is the promotion of cross phase communication between teachers to address issues of maths curriculum and pedagogical transition as distinct from pastoral considerations. A key feature will be understanding how best to prioritise key aspects of the curriculum to help ensure pupils have mastered the fundamental understanding and skills they need to underpin their progression through upper KS2 and into KS3. 

Linked ‘families’ of schools are encouraged to take part: ideally teachers from secondary schools and some of their associated primary schools will work together.  Multi-academy trusts could encourage groups of their schools to take part, in order to support collaboration across the KS2-3 transition.   We will support schools to make links with their linked primary or secondary where possible.

What is involved? 

A lesson study approach is encouraged where all participants focus on a particular aspect of the maths curriculum and work collaboratively to develop this in their schools. Cross-phase classroom observation and discussion of practice is encouraged wherever possible.  There are 3 cohorts for this project.  Dates will follow in due course. ​
