Developing Times Tables
In the next academic year, Year 4 pupils will be tested on the recall of times tables facts, through an online test called the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The purpose of the MTC ‘is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics.’ However, looking beyond year 4, children need to have both security in number facts but also flexibility in knowledge to be able to apply these facts in a range of different contexts.
This Work Group will focus on the development of effective teaching of times tables through supporting children’s conceptual understanding of multiplication and the relationships between times tables. An action research model will be used to explore effective techniques to improve instant recall preparing children both for the year 4 multiplication check but also moving into year 5 and 6 in preparation for SATs and looking beyond in to KS3.
This Work Group will be most suitable for teachers in years 2, 3 or 4. Ideally, we would like to encourage schools to nominate 2 members of staff to attend, one of which would include the Maths Lead.
The Work Group will consist of one full day in the Autumn term, 2 x 0.5 days in the Spring term, and 1 x 0.5 day in the Summer term.
PLEASE NOTE: Day 1 (9th December) has been postponed. Revised dates are: 27th January (9-4pm), 26th March (9-12), 30th April (9-12), 21st May (9-12).
