Developing Core Maths


The success of Core Maths depends in part on the growth of the pool of teachers, schools and colleges with the necessary expertise, experience and enthusiasm to teach it. This Work Groups gives teachers opportunities – through collaboration and experimentation – to develop improved teaching approaches that support the open-ended problem-solving skills Core Maths students need, and share these with departmental colleagues. Participant departments will support the role of Core Maths in promoting contextualised problem-solving and links to teaching in other subject areas.  This project involves a direct working partnership between the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP).

This Work Group will be led by Kathryn Taylor.  Kathryn is a current Core Maths teacher at Portsmouth College.  It will build on the work started in the group last year but is also open to new participants.  The online nature will allow participants to share their current strategies for the teaching of Core Maths while adapting to the current climate including Covid-recovery.

Dates:       Initially, all sessions will be held via Zoom, however we may look to offer some face to face sessions in Spring or Summer term depending on Government guidance.  Please ensure you are able to attend all the sessions to allow for continuity.  There will be an associated online community where resources will be shared.

These sessions are free of charge, however please note that a charge of £100 per participant for non-attendance without prior notice will be applied.
